Here's the statement about the project...

The history of moving image seems to have 'seriously' diverted from its canonical route ever since the launch of YouTube, in 2005, the website which made possible for anyone who could use a computer to post a video that millions of people could watch within a few minutes. More effectively than ever before, amateur videos, music videos, footages of films, commercials and news segments as well as artists' videos (in lesser numbers) mingle together, in a random way, free of any short of predetermined hierarchy or system.

Does amateur culture have undervalued artistic expertise?

Some would argue that this is true; however, it is neither a major concern nor a pragmatic threat. During the last decades, there have been a lot of debates about expertise versus amateurism or around the idea that everyone is an artist, etc, that it would be redundant to renegotiate these notions anew. Maybe it is more interesting to focus on the gaps and the relations between the systems of the art market and a more open mass culture market, to find some answers, which will not be fixed in anyway. Even if artists, in some cases, are reluctant to upload their works in there (at least up to now) due to reproduction and copyright issues, they still seem to frequent YouTube for inspiration, collecting information, socializing, communication, activism or entertainment, among other reasons! Active use of YouTube is a short of curating, where different 'playlists' of people are the exhibitions and 'tagging' is a process of a random archiving.

In a time that invitations for YouTube-exchange private gatherings become regular, seemed to make lots of sense to explore what YouTube means to a specific intellectual community, by asking a number of artists to select videos already exciting in YouTube and create their own playlists. The idea was to form a YouTube channel, a short of a paradoxical archive, or an emission in an independent media (such as YouTube) which includes all these playlists, each under the name of the artist-selector. In that plot, the uploader or the broadcaster becomes the artist, the artist becomes the curator or the collector, and the viewers exceed by far the number that can be contained into a normal screening room, since the channel is to be watched in a black cube setting and online at the same time.

Through the combination of this specific set of artists -as selectors- the aim remains always to come up with an anthology of different voices existing within the YouTube context. Perhaps, by watching this channel one could come across the notions of political, private, humor, narcissism, pop and DIY culture and distribution, -among others- as they result from various personal accounts in YouTube today.

…The ideal is a hybrid of the two, as with these rooms or locations, which suggest multiple narrative possibilities, as well as their opposite, absence of any narrative at all, just empty space. One line of approach which suggests itself is exploring the memory of cinema rather than cinema itself, shooting 'takes' or making sets which amount to fragments of a film that may one day exist or might once have existed. Where film is no longer conditioned by a single projection or linear unfolding, but can exist in a spatial dimension, a labyrinth of images in which it is possible to become lost, where the past co-exists with the present, and is not conditioned by flashback, and where the image is released from the tyranny of narrative. The great American film critic and painter Manny Farber, author of Negative Space, rarely said what a film was about. He was never interested in any synopsis of the storyline. Instead he wrote in terms of space, whether geographical, psychological or metaphysical. These rooms or locations subscribe to ideas that run deep in the history of the image, both still and moving. They subscribe to Atget's photographs of 19th century Paris, of which it was remarked that his empty, unpopulated streets looked like scenes of crimes waiting to happen. In this Atget anticipated the modern surveillance grid, diaries kept by machines, also there for the crime-in- waiting. Gloria: How are you? It’s early huh?

January: It’s is early. I just had a dream that I was hanging out with Paris Hilton. We were going out to clubs together. I was kind of following her around watching out for her. Then she somehow got implicated in a murder. I had a brilliant solution to him her. I turned her into a dyke. We cut her hair --- well, first we took out the extensions—and dyed it black. It looked good on her. I got her to wear some jeans. Things were going well. Everyone thought this new dyke from Portland (that’s what we told people) was so cute. They liked that her name was Paris and joked about it. Meanwhile, the police and press and whatever were going crazy trying to find her. The shit hit the fan though. I got Paris a job working in a breakfast dinner type place. One day her mother walks in. She was a real bitch in the dream. Paris thought it was her that set her up with the murder. Paris freaked out and pulled me into the kitchen. That’s when I woke up.

Gloria: What do you think happened? Did Paris’s mother recognize her?

January: I don’t know. I hope not. No one else suspected anything.

Gloria: Where you lovers in the dream?

January: No. I don’t think so. I think I probably had some kind of infatuation with her.

Gloria: Do you have a thing for Paris Hilton?

January: eh, no. well, I didn’t think I did.

Gloria: Would you invite Paris Hilton to join the band?

January: I don’t think so.

Gloria: What do Johnny and Cold think of Paris Hilton?

January: We’ve never talked about it.

Gloria: The concept of the band, I mean, the design of the posters, and the image of the band seems to be a comment on an obsession with pop culture.

January: Yeah. That we definitely talk about that all the time. Johnny really started the band on a whim. It was all about creating the image of band all through things like myspace and forums. It was later that the interest in what was being done musically was developed. But yeah, I guess the music industry is linked to the computer. Everyone downloads their music. It’s just so massive and people go through things – bands – quickly. Like they were interesting for that week. Time for something new. And the visuals are interesting. I would say that popular culture is dominated by visuals. Ultimately though, what we are doing musically is trying to question this. It’s not easy, you have to put some effort and involve yourself. I guess we’re playing the contrast with the visuals which suggest one thing but doing something else.

Gloria: What about indie bands? Do you see them as benefiting from this?
Well… I think indie is more of a genre now than a condition. I there’s a certain look that has spread in terms of design, in terms of fashion. We chose to play into that look more than the visuals that are associated with the noise scene to make that point.

Gloria: So playing into that “look” is the idea of behind Gelding Express?

January: I guess so. Partially. I mean, Johnny… well, all of us… are really interested in experimental music…

Gloria: And Paris Hilton?

January: (laughs) well, I don’t think it’s one or the other. We aren’t cut off from the influence of popular culture. And popular culture appropriates from what artists do… it’s more of a circle than two sides.

Gloria: I’m looking at your ipod… you listened to Dolly Parton just before this meeting?

January: Yeah, after “Horse Covers”, you know our album of songs that are about horses. I think I want us to do some Dolly Parton covers.

Gloria: I like the song “Jolene”. The Geraldine Fibbers covered that right?

January: Yeah, it’s a good cover.

Gloria: You know, talking to you, it’s rather light. I didn’t expect that. Your songs are really intense.

January: Yeah, we make a storm of noise. Not a thunderstorm. More like a sky completely covered with clouds.

Gloria: You do really build an atmosphere.

January: Atmospheric pressure! But not harsh I guess. With all the delay and loops 20 minutes can seem like five.

Gloria: Yes, hypnotic would be the word I would use.

January: I think the vocals help put it in that dreamy state.

Gloria: Yes. I do like your vocals.

January: thanks. A lot of people have told me to join a band because I have a distinctive voice. Either that or do the voice for cartoons.

Gloria: I was looking at the new video for “Horse Covers”.

January: On youtube? The new one is the Horses (after Patti Smith). I’m pleased with how it turned out.

Gloria: What do you think Patti Smith would think of it?

January: I don’t know.

Gloria: Gelding Express is really into video. Why?

January: I think it’s partially because me and Johnny come from a visual arts background. We always use video projections when we perform. Experimental video and experimental music compliment each other.

Gloria: Any last words?

January: My middle name is Gloria.

Gloria : (chuckles)

January: No! seriously, it is.

the synopsis from bruce labruce:
"Otto; or, Up with Dead People" is a melancholy zombie movie with political overtones that seeks to extend and elaborate the emerging zombie mythology. A modern fable about the loneliness, emptiness, and alienation that results from rampant consumerism and materialism under advanced capitalism, "Otto; or, Up with Dead People" presents as its central character Otto, a young man who may or may not be a zombie, depending on your point of view. Otto is first seen walking down a deserted stretch of highway, not knowing exactly where he came from or where he's going. He is dressed as a kind of neo-Goth dandy, but his clothes look and smell like they are rotting on his body. After hitching a ride with a clueless elderly couple that drops him off in the city, it quickly becomes apparent that there is something distinctly odd about Otto. He seems to be homeless, taking refuge in an abandoned amusement park, and he never sleeps. He also has an eating disorder: he has an aversion to consuming human flesh. He's a zombie with an identity crisis. He does, however, seem to have to eat some sort of flesh to survive, so he resorts to road kill and small parkland creatures like squirrels and pigeons to satiate his desire to consume.Meanwhile, we are introduced to our other principal characters, Medea Yarn, an avant-garde filmmaker whose name is an anagram for Maya Deren, one of her role models, and Fritz Fritze, her main actor. Medea is a classic Goth Goddess in the vein of Diamanda Gallas who frequents graveyards and slaughterhouses with her girlfriend, Hella Bent, a silent movie Vampyra type. With the help of her brother and cameraman, Adolf, Medea is trying to complete her epic film project, "Up with Dead People", the story of a future wave of gay zombies which rises up against a corrupt, corporatized, and soulless consumerist society. Medea and the actor Fritz Fritze, the star of "Up with Dead People", are both devout followers of the SPK, the Socialist Patients Collective that emerged in Germany in the seventies, who believed that mental illness - schizophrenia, eating disorders, and other sicknesses of the soul - is a direct result of the cruel and deadening effects of the free market capitalist system. When they finally meet Otto, who responds to one of their casting flyers for Up with Dead People, they are both convinced that Otto is the ultimate embodiment of the SPK, the proverbial one-dimensional man. Medea immediately begins to make a movie called "Otto" specifically about this strange and endearing young man. But is Otto a real zombie, or is it merely his own mental delusion?Vulnerable to the attacks of marauding youths who would seek to bash and annihilate a poor homeless fey zombie, Otto agrees to appear in Medea's movie, believing that it will be the perfect cover for him: people won't think he's a real zombie, he'll just be playing one in the movies. As Medea shoots Otto, and after the undead boy moves in with Fritz, he starts to recover his memories of the time before he was dead. But will this save Otto, or drive him to self-annihilation?"Otto; or, Up with Dead People" is a mash-up of genres and media, a modern fable and picaresque about an alienated youth in an increasingly brutal society. The film is composed of a fractured narrative that includes films-within-the-film, illustrations and text, and even some dance choreography and movement, all coming together to form a layered and textured field of images and ideas. Parts of Medea's films are shown in the movie, including "Duet for Somnabulists" and "Messy in the Afternoon", an affectionate tribute to Maya Deren's "Meshes of the Afternoon." Illustrations in the vein of Charles Addams, Edward Gorey, and Basil Wolverton, combined with stock footage and intertitles, are used to create a new zombie mythology, an allegory for our troubled times.

Gelding Express is an art collective that creates sound performances, most of the collective members have a background in the visual arts. the collective has an experimental approach which involves using everyday objects and low tech equipment such as tape loops in their performances. gelding express sound productions have been used in video and film soundtracks and the collective is working more towards integrating a sound and video practice.
